El primer vuelo comercial en un avión parcialmente alimentado con biodiesel saldrá hoy del aeropuerto londinense de Heathrow con destino a Amsterdam. El avión con el que la compañía Virgin Atlantic pretende fomentar su imagen verde no llevará pasajeros. A comienzos de este mes, Airbus ya testó su A-380, el avión de pasajeros más grande del mundo, con otro combustible alternativo al petróleo. En este caso, se trató de un compuesto sintético entre el gas y el líquido.
En realidad, sólo uno de los cuatro motores del avión será alimentado con biodiesel. Es decir, que sólo el 20% de la energía utilizada durante el trayecto será de este tipo. Este procedimiento reduce el riesgo de que algo falle, pues los otros tres motores que funcionan con combustible normal podrían impulsar el avión hasta su destino en caso de que el cuarto se parase.
Virgin no ha querido detallar qué tipo de biodiesel va a utilizar en el vuelo (de qué planta está hecho).
Hasta ahora, el biodiesel ha dado muchos problemas en su utilización en aeronavegación por ser un combustible más propenso a congelarse en grandes alturas. Compañías como General Electric y Boeing trabajan desde hace tiempo en tecnologías que lo hagan menos vulnerable al frío. Virgin cree que en diez años se podrá usar regularmente en vuelo.
Muchos ecologistas, en cambio, son críticos con esta solución. Consideran que sembrar plantas para energía no es sostenible para el planeta y contribuirá a subir el precio de los alimentos básicos para mucha población empobrecida.
Kenneth Richter, de Friends of the Earth, ha dicho a la BBC: “Este tipo de iniciativas no son más que una distracción sobre las verdaderas soluciones al cambio climático”.

Lo primero, por ejemplo, volver al Suomi Pubi , el pub karaoke finlandés del Puerto de la Cruz, estuve ayer que ibamos al concierto de un amigo; pero ése era el plan inicial, porque antes de empezar a tocar el grupo de el colega la policía les canceló por ruido.Así que tocó hecharse una comilona, y cantar en el karaoke con un amigo y el dueño del pub, en finlandés por supuesto. Que guapo, nunca había cantado en un karaoke, pero volveré por ahí eso seguro
Luego quiero comprarme una Wii, pero claro, del querer al poder va un rato xD. Así que me conformaré si mañana le llega por fin uno de los chips para Wii al amigo UNIX4ALL y podemos quedar para hecharnos unas buenas risas.
También quedan por hacer unas buenas rutas con la bici e ir conociendo gente para salir y demás. Por lo pronto a ver si me acerco el domingo al Bikeparktenerife a hechar una manita y ver como va eso.
Y por último pero no menos importante, en verdad es lo más importante, hay que estudiar para el parcial de Zoologia del 10 de Marzo, ¡que es ya mismito!
